Scope and content

The series contains issues of the OMRI weekly electronic newsletter OMRI Economic Digest. It carried reports on economic and business developments in all the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It is a summary of the major news items on business, finance and national monetary and fiscal policy for the nations of the former Soviet Union and East, Central and Southeastern Europe. The weekly newsletter provided some coverage of each of the nations in the region. It had three regular sections: "In Brief", short items of interest from the region, and a summary of the key economic indicators from one selected economy in the region, and a summary of exchange rates for the currencies of the region. The "Snapshot" provides the following time series data:
- Exchange rates
- Retail price inflation
- Foreign trade
- Unemployment rates
- Real GDP growth
- Average net monthly wage
- Current account balance
- Money supply growth

Items for the Economic Digest were received from three sources and reviewed for economic importance by OMRI's three economists. The first and primary source was OMRI's Research and Analysis staff (approximately 25) who gathered economic items from OMRI's regular media monitoring operations as well as from commercial and other wire services. The second source of items for the publication was OMRI's cadre of economic corespondents around the region. Correspondents watched for stories or events that would be appropriate for the Economic Digest and then submitted the items for approval by email. Also OMRI economists provided regular pieces on their specialty as well as evaluating individual items and editing the final newsletter.

The publication was delivered electronically by subscription and later through OMRI's listserv for $250 per year. Additionally subscribers could elect to receive the newsletter in print form by either fax or regular mail. In 1997 it had approximately 200 subscribers.
The publication was suspended in January 1997.
