Administrative/Biographical history

Archival history

After the closure of the Open Media Research Institute in 1994, under the special agreement the files stayed at RFE/RL to support research, publishing and broadcasting.

Due to problems in the transfer procedure from Prague to Budapest the original arrangement of the series was slightly changed. The new system of arrangement reflects the one that was introduced and used both at the archives of the RFE/RL Research Institute and the Open Media Research Institute for filing materials with main entries like Economy, Politics, Security, Social Issues, etc.

Scope and content

The Belarus Monitoring Archives (Subject Files) was started by the staff of the Slavic, Baltic and Eurasian Archives at the RFE/RL Research Institute (Munich, Germany) and later continued at the Open Media Research Institute, thus covering the period from 1992 to 1997. Collected materials, consisting mostly of press clippings, news agency releases and TV and radio monitoring, were filed according to English subject codes. Due to transfer procedures the original order was slightly modified at Open Society Archives.

The series comprise information relating to Belarus on different topics such as economy, politics, foreign relations and relations with CIS countries, armed forces and social issues. Of particular interest are files and materials on the state building, government structure and activities, and political movements in Belarus, including files on different parties and alliances.

Within the entry Politics: Public and Political Figures the files on prominent political leaders and activists can be found.
