Archival history

After closure of the Open Media Research Institute in 1994 under the special agreement the files stayed at RFE/RL to support their research, publishing and broadcasting activitis. They were transferred to Open Society Archives in
Due to transfer procedures' problems from Prague to Budapest the original arrangement of the series was slightly changed. The new system of arrangement reflects the one that was introduced and used both at the archives of RFE/RL Research Institute and Open Media Research Institute for filing materials with main entries like Economy, Politics, Security, Social Issues, etc.

Scope and content

The Russian Monitoring Archives (Subject Files) was started by the staff of the Slavic, Baltic and Eurasian Archives at the RFE/RL Research Institute (Munich, Germany) and later continued at the Open Media Research Institute, thus mostly covering the period from 1992 to 1997 although ealier and later materials can be found.

Collected materials, consisting mostly of press clippings, news agency releases and TV and radio monitoring, were filed according to English subject codes. Due to transfer procedures the original order was slightly modified at Open Society Archives.

The series comprise information relating to the Russian Federation on different topics such as economy, politics, foreign relations and relations with other CIS countries, armed forces and social issues. Of particular interest are files and materials on the state building, government structure and activities, development of market economy including finance, banking system, etc. Another large bulk of materials are connected with human rights movements and national relations and conflicts in the post-Soviet period. The series also includes biographical files on prominent public and political figures.
