Scope and content

RFE/RL daily monitored the Bulgarian national radio and produced transcripts of broadcasts. The transcripts were distributed as bulletins entitled "Bulgarian Monitoring". The series contains the bulletins from 1982 to 1985, with a gap until 1991. From 1988 to 1990 some monitoring of radio in other countries but related to Bulgaria was also carried out, so that separate series of Foreign and Bulgarian Monitoring have been compiled. Starting from 1991 television monitoring was included in the bulletins. In 1993 the title of the distributed copy was changed to "Bulgaria Today: Media News and Features Digest: TV and Radio Monitoring". Particular attention was paid to foreign and domestic news of the Bulgarian radio and television, political programs, and surveys of future events and of various Bulgarian newspapers. Interviews and speeches of prominent politicians were also monitored, as well as programs by leading Bulgarian journalists.
