Authority entry: Bulgarian Unit

Mandate, functions and sphere of activity

In order to support broadcasts the staff of the Bulgarian Unit had to collect comprehensive information about what happened in Bulgaria after the Second World War. Information was selected from Bulgarian and Western media and archived on files under different codes.
These materials was an important source for the Bulgarian journalists in RFE to use while writing about the country behind the Iron Curtain
The Bulgarian Unit operated since the beginning of broadcasting to Bulgaria, in the summer of 1950. It was named "Evaluation and Research" and was a sub-division of the News and Information Services Department. At the start, except for the News desk, all Bulgarian units operated in RFE’s New York branch. In 1957 the whole Bulgarian section was moved to Munich. In 1974 the Evaluation and Research unit was renamed the Research and Analysis Department which, in its turn, became a part of the East European Archives of RFE’s Research Institute in 1990.

Relationships

Bulgarian Unit as a part of East European Archives belonged to Information Resources Department which was one of the five divisions of RFE/RL Research Institute.
