Scope and content
The files contain materials related to the Soviet and newly independent Baltic States but the majority of documents are dedicated to Latvia. The topics of the files are broad:
- dissident movement (biographic files of some dissidents, samizdat documents, dissident press as Auseklis, Batun, Neatkariba, foreign and Baltic press materials, documents concerning the activities of different organizations as Helsinki-86, Group to Defend the Believers’ Rights, immigration processes, Helsinki decisions materials);
- internal affairs of the Baltic Republics (States) including the activity of the Parliaments, Governments, economic development, environmental issues, cultural processes -ballet, music, theatre, movies, ethnography, religion, city of Riga etc. (most of these documents are miscellaneous and arranged chronologically); special attention is given to the press - mostly there are printed copies, but the original Baltic press is present as well;
- Soviet policy in the Baltic States including the official decisions, press materials about the Soviet leaders’ visits etc.; also there are daily reports on the Soviet issues that cover the broader territory than the Baltic Republics themselves;
- Baltic history concerning their incorporation into the USSR after the Soviet -German Treaty (articles in press and press releases about the demonstrations against this treaty);
- Independence movement - the proclamations and other documents of the Latvian People’s Front, Forum, press releases concerning the Baltic demonstrations, the electoral activities and their results;
- international affairs (the activity of the Baltic émigré organizations abroad as the World Federation of Free Latvians, international responses to the Communist rule in the Baltic states, materials of Conferences on Baltic Issues in Scandinavia in which Dzintra Bungs took part);
- Russian minority in the newly independent states (press).
In addition, the files contain 8 cassettes and a collection of books.Accruals Not expected
