Extent and medium 769 Archival boxes, 96 linear meters
Scope and content
In this series the materials include press clippings, news agency releases, RFE/RL research papers and background analyses, transcripts of radio broadcasts, émigré publications, letters, information items and, occasionally, photocopies of governmental documents from 1948.
The documents give a broad picture on Romanian political life, economic and social issues, culture and religion, security and military topics, minorities, and sports. The files relating to anti-Western and anti-RFE propaganda, ethnic minorities, prison conditions and forced labor camps are of outstanding interest. The files regarding the criticism of and resistance to the regime, dissidents and persecution of dissenters are useful cross-references to the Records Relating to the Romanian Opposition and Protest Movement.
A voluminous collection of speeches of communist leaders and files documenting the cult of personality of the Ceausescus are also important parts of this series.Accruals Not expected
