Administrative/Biographical history

Scope and content

In order to ensure easy access to registered samizdat documents the Samizdat Archives produced several issues of registers in both Russian and English in the period 1971-1977. Each register lists Samizdat documents under their registration numbers in sequential order (starting from AS#1). The 1977 Register lists altogether 3000 documents.
The registers helped to process newly arrived materials, using previously checked documents for reference purposes, and also served as finding aids to the samizdat collection. The 1977 Register has a special attachment: the “Document locator" (“Podrobnyi nomernoi ukazatel" in the Russian version) stating in which issue of “Sobranie documentov Samizdata" and “Materialy Samizdata" each document was published.

Later the staff of Samizdat Archives used the cover pages of “Materialy Samizdata", listing the rest of the published Samizdat documents, as a finding aid. There is a set of these cover pages (over one thousand for the period 1973-1992) and a list of Samizdat documents which were prepared for publishing further issue(s) of the register (AS 4001—AS 6608) in this series.

Both the registers and the cover pages provided bibliographic descriptions of each document (including title/description, author, statement of responsibility, place of issue, date of issue, and size of item).
