Scope and content

This card index includes the names of people who either authored or signed Samizdat documents.
In the 1970s campaigns conducted by sending letters of protest signed by dozens of people became a major form of opposition activity in the Soviet Union. This is probably why Samizdat Archives (SA) decided to build a name index of people who had participated in such campaigns.


Besides the name, each card indicates the registration number of the Samizdat document where the name came from (following the registration number is the number of the signatures in the signature list), and sometimes the title of the document.
Occasionally, cards contain additional information about the person (year of birth, type of dissident activity that the person was involved in, profession, number of children). Some cards refer to other published Samizdat documents linked to the one where the name came from.
There is a very small number of cards referring to groups responsible for documents, such as IG (Initsiativnaia gruppa), Gruziny.
There are several groups of cards attached to the name index: (1) listing anonymous Samizdat documents; (2) referring to those signatories who signed Samizdat documents with their first name or initials; (3) unofficial records of closed court hearings (Zapisi sudebnykh protsessov); (4) court verdicts and appeals (Prigovory i kassatsii); (5) search records and examination records (Protokoly).

The index only occasionally refers to Samizdat documents with numbers below 1000.
