European Heritage Days in the building of the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives at CEU

Blinken OSA participates in the European Heritage Days, and its building, the Goldberger House (built in 1911) will be open to the public on September 15 and 16, 2018. Guided tours will be held on both Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and at 4:00 p.m., on demand also in English.

On September 16, 2018, at 5:00 p.m., as part of the closing ceremony of the current exhibition in Blinken OSA’s Galeria Centralis (Farewell to Spring – Revolutionary Youth Magazines 1968. Nr. 2) there will be a talk (in English) and on September 16, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. a guided tour by the curator.

About the building:

“The Diplomatic Store - does anyone still remember this name? I mean that building in Arany János utca, where the most absurd trading took place (before 1989). Can you remember? Some Hungarians, during their (limited) trips to the West would rather skip a meal there in order to save some hard currency (strictly rationed) and then pay it into a local account which would then allow them to purchase “western goods” in the building at 32 Arany János utca, Budapest.” This is how an article in the Népszabadság daily newspaper described the Goldberger House, which was previously the retail outlet of the Goldberger family’s textile manufacturing company.

Since 2000 the building has been owned by the Central European University, and in 2005 Blinken OSA moved in. The basement of the building now holds the records of the fieldwork that underpinned Radio Free Europe's broadcasts during the Cold War, as well as a collection of Human Rights documents.
