OSA Acquires the Tibor Philipp Collection

Tibor Philipp Collection

OSA has acquired a new collection related to Tibor Philipp, a well-known member of the Democratic Opposition and of the alternative art group Inconnnu in the 1980s.

Inconnu, founded in 1978, invented the technique of "mail art" designed to trick censorship: to make sure that the mail is delivered unopened by authorities, the name of the person the mail was for was put on the envelope as sender and the addressee was a fictitious name. Undeliverable, the letter was sent back to the sender marked "inconnu" – hence the name of the group. Tibor Philipp joined the group in 1982 and also participated in the political opposition in the 80s, where he played an active role in samizdat production and distribution.

The collection is highly varied, includes, in addition to personal papers, photography, graphic design, and some very artistic and colorful ephemera as well as 20 audiotapes of recordings of a samizdat news program and samizdat periodicals and monographs, complementing our older collections: HU OSA 302 Gábor Demszky Personal Papers; HU OSA 355 János Kis Collection of Hungarian Samizdat and Documents of the Democratic Opposition; HU OSA 383 Géza Sáska Collection of Hungarian Samizdat; HU OSA 397 György Krassó Collection of Hungarian Samizdat.

Some items in this collection can also be found in Artpool, a resume of their exhibition activities can be read here: http://www.betekinto.hu/en/node/173

In total the new collection makes up approximately 5 linear meters of records.

During the Budapest collection days of Europeana 1989, a project collecting and publishing personal memorabilia related to the political and social changes of 1989 in Eastern Europe to be organized at OSA Archivum on September 5-6, 2014, samizdat material from this collection will be on display, and several photos will be added to the project's website (www.europeana1989.eu)
