Archiving the International Communist Movement: Critical Inquiries on the Knowledge Production of the Cold War

by Matus Adrian-George, CEU Budapest – OSUN Postdoctoral fellow at Blinken OSA

Kevin Devlin was senior political analyst at the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty for more than 20 years, served as chief of the research department’s Free World Analysis section in the 1960s, and later assistant director of the Communist Area Analysis Department. The office on Non-Ruling Communist Parties, led by Devlin, collected materials on Communist parties in non-target countries worldwide, from Argentina to Italy and to Japan. Cataloged as Records of Kevin Devlin and the Communist Area Analysis Department on Non-Ruling Communist Parties, the collection preserved at Blinken OSA comprises press clippings and summaries, biographies, congress materials, diplomatic reports, and office documents, related to virtually all the Communist parties in non-Socialist countries. Besides reconstructing Devlin’s professional career, Matus’s aim was to understand how the RFE perceived the attitudes of Western Communist parties to topics like the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia or Soviet dissidents’ activity.

At 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in CEU Room 307/A at Nádor u. 13. and online.
