OSA Archivum marks the passing of Mark Palmer, former US ambassador to Hungary 1986-1990, by recalling his efforts to promote the democratic transformations in Hungary and the region. On this occasion, we publish several archival documents relating to his direct involvement in the political processes of the late 1980s.

OSA Archivum cordially invites you to the launch of Ildikó Barna and Andrea Pető’s book on the controversial topic of post-World War II Hungarian jurisdiction, A politikai igazságszolgáltatás a II. világháború utáni Budapesten (Political Jurisdiction in Budapest after World War II), published by Gondolat in 2012. The book is an attempt at an unbiased and objective description of the “people’s tribunal process” and how the people's courts worked.

Our digital collection of Information Items comprises over 70,000 anonymized interviews with defectors and travelers from countries behind the Iron Curtain, conducted by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty staff members in the Radios' field offices in the period 1951-1957.

Featuring contemporary press clippings and memoires, posters, original photographs, radio broadcasts and films, the exhibition reconstructs the destruction of the Second Hungarian Army by the Don River in January 1943. It also reflects on the interpretations of this expedition in the various political regimes and its place in the historical memory in Hungary after WWII.

For a better and deeper understanding of the interdependent recent history of (the center of) Europe, the International Visegrad Fund offers 15 research fellowship grants annually in the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives at Central European University, Budapest on a competitive basis to support scholars who wish to conduct research in the holdings of OSA, and whose current research projects are relevant to the holdings and the given research priorities of the Fund and OSA.
