Disturbing the Peace. Low-Profile Dissidents in Communist Romania in the 1980s

Ana-Maria Cătănuș, PhD, senior researcher at the National Institute for the Study of Totalitarianism, Romanian Academy

The presentation focuses on low-profile Romanian dissidents, Cătănuș identified as such based on the Records of RFE/RL Research Institute, preserved at the Blinken OSA Archivum. The research on Romanian dissent in Romania and abroad tackle mostly cases of renowned dissidents with more prolonged activity and extensive support from Western media, political actors, or Romanian exiles. Such were Paul Goma, Mihai Botez, Vlad Georgesc or Doina Cornea. However, the present research intends to bring to light stories of lesser- or unknown individuals who openly challenged political power. This presentation inquires about their biographies, social and political background, how they chose to manifest opposition, and the consequences they had to face for their actions.
